What About Caffeine?
Caffeine is a stimulant that increases activity in the brain and leads to higher levels of concentration and alertness. Although it is commonly seen as a positive substance, caffeine can lead to negative side effects and behaviors.
Stimulant drugs come in all shapes and sizes. The term “stimulant” is more commonly known with drugs like Ritalin, cocaine, and meth. However, caffeine is grouped in this category as well. Although coffee is the most obvious form, energy drinks, sodas, tea, chocolate, pain pills, and cold medicines are stimulants too. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system in the brain; it speeds up your mental processes, and can make you feel more alert and able to concentrate. It’s essential to be wary of the amount of intake. Moderation is key, especially with a kind of stimulant. Caffeine can become addictive, and wreak havoc on the body. Here are some of the downsides of caffeine:
- Rapid heartbeat
- Dehydration
- Increased anxiety
- Addiction
- Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- Increased blood pressure
- Frequent urination
- Lack of sleepiness
According to the Centers for Disease and Control, 73 percent of children consume caffeine every day. Much of this comes from sodas or chocolate. Think about soda for a minute. Most soft drinks have lots of added sugars as well as caffeine. For example, cola drinks have about 50mg per 375ml, while and energy drinks have around 160mg per 250ml. They might taste delicious, but they aren’t great for your health. Coffee, energy drinks, and chocolates can lead to obesity and diabetes if intake is not controlled. Just think twice next time you have caffeine, and be aware of the negative potential of the substance. Taking care of your body is the best thing you can do for your future.
